The Pella Little Dutch entered Friday’s Week 9 contest at Grinnell with one goal in mind: win the game, and as a result, take back the district. The Dutch did just that, winning 28-14 in a game broadcast on the KRLS2 stream.
Aaron Downs got the scoring underway with two touchdown runs in the first quarter, the first from seven yards out and the second from four yards. Both teams were held scoreless in the second quarter as Pella took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was much of the same, but Downs again scampered for 45 yards to give the Dutch a 21-0 lead. A 25 yard run in the fourth made it 28-0, effectively putting the game away. Grinnell added a couple of garbage time touchdowns for the final tally of 28-14. Pella Coach Jay McKinstrey said they accomplished their number one goal of the season, and could not be prouder of his team and what it means for the community.
Aaron Downs finished with 126 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Ryan Mace finished 8/13 passing for 78 yards. Josh Warner led defensively with 5.5 total tackles.
Pella finishes the regular season 7-2 and a perfect 5-0 in Class 3A District 7 and host Independence in the playoff opener.
