As local school board and city council elections are set to be held Tuesday. The Knoxville School District would like to remind voters about another important measure on this year’s ballot. When Knoxville voters go to the polls, besides the five school board candidates up for election they will also see a Revenue Purpose Statement. The statement, long and written by lawyers, is a measure that needs to be approved by Knoxville voters so the district can spend money from the state’s Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) Fund. The money for the SAVE Fund comes from the one cent sales tax which was extended and approved by the Iowa Legislature this past spring. Knoxville School’s Superintendent Cassi Pearson tells KNIA/KRLS News the money from the SAVE fund is used for buses, buildings and technology. Pearson says the district is not allowed to use the money for salaries or benefits but can use it to take care of other brick and mortar and equipment type needs. Business Manager Craig Mobley says the measure on the ballot titled “Proposition OQ” is just an approval to use the funds and is not a new tax. He says nothing is changing with the sales tax, the district will just have the approval to spend the funds from it.
