National Wreaths Across America Day is today, and to celebrate, local veterans groups and volunteers placed 252 wreaths on gravestones at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,600 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Knoxville’s Graceland Cemetery is one of only 16 cemeteries in Iowa that takes part in the annual tradition. The wreath laying at Graceland Cemetery was carried out earlier than expected today as the truck delivering the wreaths wasn’t expected to arrive until 11:30 but instead arrived early. Marla Suter with Wreaths Across America tells KNIA/KRLS News she appreciates everyone’s hard work laying the wreaths and because the truck arrived early the wreaths were in place earlier than expected and she wanted to apologize to anyone who wanted to come out and take part in the event. She says he appreciates everyone who helped make today possible. A military ceremony at the Veteran’s Plot followed the wreath laying.
