After a split matchup against ADM on Saturday, the Lady and Little Dutch are back at home this week beginning with games against Newton. The girls lost 55-48 to a well-rounded ADM squad while the boys pulled a close one late in the fourth quarter. The Lady Dutch now hold a record of 4-4 and the boys at 5-2. The Newton girls come into this matchup with a 4-4 record while the boys are 2-4.
For the girls of Pella, junior Madison Naig leads with over 11 points a game and Faith Diers with 9. Against ADM, Naig tallied 19 points while freshman Jasmine Namminga grabbed 15 rebounds. Newton’s Chassidy Henwood leads the Cardinals in scoring with about 12 points per game.
The Little Dutch are led by Seniors Logan Shetterly and Treyton Sturgeon. Shetterly averaging just under 22 points per game and Sturgeon with 16.4 points per game. The duo combines for almost half of the team points this season. On Saturday, Shetterly racked up 20 points shooting 7-16 from the field and Sturgeon with 14. For the Cardinals, sophomore Noah Allen leads the way with 15.7 points per game.
Pella Boys’ head coach, Derek Schulte, says that Newton has improved over the past year.
“Newton is an improved team. They had young guards last year and they’re gonna be a much different looking team this year than they were last year. There is a lot more confidence to them. We’re excited to get back into it. You can see with the two week break that we had some good practices but you can’t simulate that gameplay, so for us to get back into a game routine on Tuesday on Friday night is something we’re looking forward to and we look forward to playing Pella basketball on Tuesday.”
The Dutch begin their dance with Newton with the girls at 6:15 and the boys game to follow. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
