One of the most dominant teams in Iowa High School basketball history will return home to celebrate a special occasion. The 1990 Pella Christian boys basketball team will all attend a showing of the documentary “Soar Mighty Eagles” on Thursday, January 16th, with doors opening at 6 p.m. at Pella Christian High School. The feature highlights the 25-0 Eagles run to the school’s first ever state championship win, the first of three in a four year span for one of the greatest Iowa basketball programs over the past three decades. Jerry Nikkel was head coach of the 1990 Eagles, and led the program to three state championships in four years, and says it will be special to see the team come back together for the first time since that magical March.
Following the Soar Mighty Eagles documentary showing on January 16th, the 1990 championship team will be honored at the home game against Oskaloosa the following night. Tune into Let’s Talk Pella and the Radio Sports Page all next week to hear special features about the Eagles and their memories from 30 years ago. The documentary is being produced by Jeff Verhoef, who was the student manager of the 1990 Eagles.
