The Knoxville Hospital and Clinics is asking residents to get their flu shot. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 15 additional pediatric deaths were reported across the nation this week, bringing the total deaths for the season to 54. Influenza B viruses account for 37 of the 54 reported flu-related pediatric deaths this season. Dr. Marty Errthum with the hospital tells KNIA/KRLS News the flu typically presents with a fever, chills, cough and body aches. Dr. Errthum says the hospital has seen a number of people that have come in and not had a fever. She says they don’t have the typical presentation associated with the flu just a little bit of a cough and she says because of that you can’t always tell who has the flu so people should be washing their hands thoroughly as well as using hand sanitizer when they can. In Iowa the Department of Public Health lists influenza as “widespread” throughout the state. The CDC estimates that so far this flu season there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses, 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths from flu.
