One of the priorities for the Iowa Legislature over the next several weeks will be to move forward with addressing water quality. Representative Scott Ourth tells KNIA News ten years ago a statewide referendum was passed overwhelmingly in support of moving funds from the penny sales tax to go towards water quality, and now the legislature will potentially take action. Ourth says this issue has bipartisan support, and he is hopeful it will get done.

“I will say I am very eager as a legislator and as the ranking member on the House Committee on Natural Resources, to get to work on this. Our water quality is not good, and we’ve been talking around the edges on this for a long time. In my view it’s time we meet this issue head on, and if we raise the penny tax we should have the money to do some substantial things to turn this around and get our water quality back where it needs to be.”
