A candlelight vigil was held in Melcher-Dallas Wednesday night to honor two teenagers killed in a triple homicide in Des Moines. Nineteen-year-old Devonte Swanks, his sixteen-year-old brother Malachi, along with 15-year-old Thayne Wright were shot and killed inside a home in Des Moines on January 30th. On Tuesday, Des Moines police charged twenty-year-old Daishawn Gills and nineteen-year-old Emmanuel Totaye Jr. with three counts of first degree murder. The Swanks brothers lived in Melcher-Dallas and attended the Melcher-Dallas Community School District.  Devonte Swanks played for the Melcher-Dallas High School basketball team as a freshman in the 2015-2016 season and Malachi attended Melcher-Dallas High School for part of this past school year. Melcher-Dallas School’s Superintendent Scott Bridges tells KNIA/KRLS News the murder of Devonte and Machali Swanks is a tough loss for the school district and the community as the Swanks brothers were close to many students and staff in the district. Bridges says the district is still trying to cope with the loss and has brought in extra counselors to help students and staff in this difficult time. A GoFundme page has been set up for the family of Devonte and Malachi. A fundraiser for Thayne Wright has already reached its fundraising goal. To donate, click here:
