The Pella Community School District has been focusing on the mental well-being of students at many of their grade levels this academic year. Madison Elementary Principal John Steddom says social-emotional learning can start at a young age, and staff and administration in buildings across the district have been working to improve how students respond and handle stress and anxiety beyond the curriculum. While the focus is improving students, Steddom says teachers and staff members are also receiving training to better handle stress themselves as well.
