The status of high school summer sports is still very much up in the air. With last week’s announcement that schools would be closed for the rest of the school year, the earliest spring sports would start is June 1st. Since there cannot be formal instruction from coaches to student-athletes, it is up to the student to make sure they are prepared for the season. Pleasantville Softball coach Jan Haugen says that preparation is especially important for pitchers and catchers, whose organized workouts were put on hiatus when COVID-19 struck.
“Starting pitchers and catchers, we were working out for two or three weeks, and then this thing hit. So you worry about your pitchers too. They are one of the keys to winning softball games, so what do you do? You hope they work out on their own, you hope they work out with their parents, or they’ve got a situation where they can isolate and do some stuff on their own. Other than that, there’s not much else you can do.”
If the season starts as currently scheduled, the Trojans would open at home on June 2nd against Earlham.
