Central’s softball team pulled off the lone upset of the opening round of yesterday’s simulated NCAA softball championship.  The project is the brainchild of Central statistics professor Russ Goodman.

In the event, which includes the top eight teams in the computerized Massey Ratings, Goodman is simulating results based on mathematical algorithms.

Central, the eight-seed, knocked off number one seed and actual 2019 champion Texas Lutheran, 4-3.  In the second round, which will be simulated today, the Dutch will take on Illinois Wesleyan, a 4-2 extra inning winner over 2017 and 2018 champion Virginia Wesleyan.

The other opening round games saw East Texas Baptist beat Salisbury 2-1, and Christopher Newport shut out Transylvania 4-0.

Four more games will be played today, leading to a best-of-three virtual championship series on Sunday.  You can follow along throughout the weekend at https://twitter.com/CentralsProfG
