The 2020 Iowa Legislature is scheduled to resume on June 3rd, 11 weeks after the session was suspended due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

When lawmakers in the Iowa Senate and House return to the Capitol, District 40 State Senator Ken Rozenboom says immediate attention will be needed to address the future of the state’s finances.

Rozenboom says the state was in “excellent” fiscal condition prior to the closures in Iowa and delays in tax payment deadlines that have both since significantly reduced state revenue.

Rozenboom says putting the budget together will be especially difficult without financial estimates to work with — the last scheduled meeting of the Revenue Estimating Conference took place in March, just days before senators and representatives were sent home. Governor Kim Reynolds and Republican majority leadership in both chambers have called for the group to reconvene before lawmakers return to work on June 3rd.
