Following Governor Kim Reynolds press conference Friday, the Pleasantville Community School District was given the go ahead to hold their drive through graduation ceremony. The ceremony will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. The plan is for students to get dressed up in their graduation cap and gowns and get lined up in a car or truck (no motorcycles or mopeds) and have a legal, trusted family member or friend drive them slowly through the parade route designated by the district.
For the drive-through graduation, seniors will start lining up in their vehicles at 1:00 pm at the entrance to Webb Shadle Park and then follow the route through town slowly and safely. The City of Pleasantville has coordinated with the school on this event and will have some streets blocked off for safety purposes during the parade. There should be no more than six people in a vehicle and everyone is encouraged to stay in their vehicles before, during, and after the event.
Due to the rain earlier this week and additional rain forecasted for the weekend there will be no drive-through loop around the stadium. Graduates will stay in their vehicles and pick up their diploma off a pedestal or table right from the road out in front of PHS main entrance during the parade route. The traditional “Pomp and Circumstance March” song will be played and graduates will hear their names read over the stadium speakers as they drive by the entrance to PHS.
Guests and friends of graduates can line up anywhere they would like along the parade route to clap and cheer for graduates, but are asked to keep the area along Jones Street near PHS reserved for graduates and their immediate families.
A live feed of the drive through graduation event will be available on the school district’s Facebook page.
Pending the rules and regulations for the state of Iowa, the new date for Pleasantville’s traditional graduation ceremony for the PHS Class of 2020 has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 28th at 2:00 pm.
