When it was announced that the high school summer sports were going to take place, many student-athletes who lost their spring seasons decided to go out for either baseball or softball and fulfill their competitive desires. In the case of seniors, it’s the last ever opportunity to represent their school on the athletic field. For the PCM Baseball team, it means the addition of a speedy football and track star. Nigel Sperfslage is on the varsity team for the first time as a senior, and Head Coach Jeff Lindsay expects him to make an immediate impact along the basepaths.
“Nigel Sperfslage, he’s a football player and played on the varsity team, and he was a track runner. Losing his track season and it being his senior year, he wanted to give baseball a try again. He hasn’t played for a few years. He’s a little rusty, but he’s not rusty with his speed. And that’s going to be first and foremost what he’s going to be able to bring to the varsity team, whether it’s a courtesy runner or pinch runner type of capacity. As far as the fielding and hitting, he’s really starting to catch onto the concept again, and he’s really improving each day.”
Sperfslage and the rest of the Mustangs will begin the regular season on Monday at home against South Hamilton.
