The PCM baseball and softball teams both played host to South Hamilton Monday evening to raise the curtain on the 2020 campaign. On the baseball diamond in Prairie City, it was a humbling start to the season for PCM against an experienced Hawk team, a 17-4 Mustang loss. Neither team crossed the plate throughout the first two innings, but South Hamilton’s offense exploded for seven runs in the third. The Hawks tacked on insurance runs in the middle innings, before an outburst of six runs in the seventh inning. PCM plated three runs in the sixth, but it was not nearly enough.
Beau Webb was the only multi-hit performer for the Mustangs, while Gabe Steenhoek led the way with two RBI’s. The 0-1 Mustangs are back at home Wednesday evening to take on Saydel.
On the softball diamond in Monroe, it was a difficult loss for the Mustangs in a 3-2 defeat. PCM got on the board with a 2-0 lead in the third, but it was quickly answered by South Hamilton in the fourth with two runs of their own. Another run in the fifth proved to be the winning score, as the Mustangs had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the frame. In the seventh, the tying run was stranded at third, giving South Hamilton the narrow victory.
Paige Steenhoek gave up six hits and struck out nine batters in her complete game performance. Riley Johannes was the top batter, picking up a base hit while driving in two runs. PCM starts the season 0-1, and they’ll be back in action this evening, hosting Colfax-Mingo.
