The Pella Christian softball and baseball teams could not find victory in opening night contests at Oskaloosa, with the baseball team falling 5-1 and the softball team dropping a see-saw of a game 12-9, which was heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Eagles girls found themselves in a deep hole after one inning, with the No. 4 in 4A Indians dropping a seven-spot in the opening frame. Pella Christian bounced back quickly in the 2nd inning, capped off with a massive blast from their No. 9 hitter.
Freshman Emri Agre crushed a three-run home run to cut the lead to 7-4. Oskaloosa would tack on a pair of multiple-run innings and extend to a 12-4 advantage heading into the 7th inning.
The Eagles were quick to start a rally, cutting the lead in half after just one out, but the game ended on a costly baserunning error. Head Coach Karen Harrill says while the team will need to clean up some defense, pitching, and baserunning, the overall ability of the entire offense to generate runs from top to bottom–especially against elite pitching, is promising.
Chloe Morgan was 3-for-4 with a run, RBI, and stolen base; Sydney Nunnikhoven was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, and Agre finished with two hits.
The Eagles baseball team fell behind in similar fashion to their softball counterparts, giving up five runs in the first inning and never finding their footing against a talented Osky squad.
Both teams start the season at 0-1, and have an off day before heading to Pella High School for a pair of Tulip City doubleheaders, which can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS and kniakrls.com.
