The Pella Christian baseball team played host to Cardinal of Eldon Saturday evening to begin the Class 2A District 11 postseason tournament. The Comets used a strong start to pave the way for a 2-0 win over the Eagles, as aired on KRLS.
Cardinal started the game strong in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Comet sophomore Dawson Lewis smashed a triple to the outfield, driving in the first run of the game. In the next at bat, Lewis came home to score on a wild pitch, making it 2-0 Cardinal.
That would conclude the scoring for the rest of the game. Eagles pitcher Devin Haveman was able to keep the Comets in check for the rest of his outing, but crucial strikeouts and clutch double plays thwarted any scoring opportunities that Pella Christian had. Head Coach Jeff Bruxvoort says that it was a disappointing way for the season to end, and that his team was unable to hit the ball to their potential.
“Unfortunately a lot of things didn’t go our way, we just didn’t hit the baseball tonight like we’ve been able to before. Credit their pitcher to that. He kept us off balance. But this one is tough. When you’ve got nine seniors on the squad, it’s going to be a tough discussion afterwards, and we definitely had that.”
Pella Christian was held to just one base hit on the night, a Devin Haveman single in the fourth inning. Haveman pitched the complete game for the Eagles, giving up five hits and four walks while striking out five batters. Pella Christian’s season ends with a record of 3-12.
