Pella Football Dominates Independence to Advance to Quarterfinals

Suffocating defense had the Pella football team advancing to the round of eight in the Class 3A playoffs in 2019, after a 24-6 win over Independence heard live on 92.1 KRLS on November 1st, and the postseason victory is No. 3 on the top ten countdown of moments from Pella High School this past school year.

The high-octane Mustangs had their fuel supply cut off by the Pella D early and often in the contest, as the road team gained less than 130 yards of total offense, with their only score coming on a kickoff return for six long after the contest had been decided.

Pella’s defense finished with four forced turnovers, including three interceptions, and two sacks. Aaron Downs fueled the majority of Pella’s offensive production, with 142 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Downs, Warren Page, and Logan Shetterly each came up with interceptions defensively.

Pella next faced undefeated Solon, falling to the eventual 3A state runners up in a 24-0 shutout in the quarterfinals round.
