While the focus for health professionals has been slowing the spread of COVID-19, the looming flu season may pose additional difficulties as fall approaches.

Kim Boldt is Infection Preventionist at Pella Regional Health Center, and says the ongoing pandemic could be worsened when the seasonal influenza viruses return, which cause several hospitalizations each year.

Boldt says it’s key for all individuals who can to take precautions, such as a flu vaccine and continued use of face masks, as well as good hand hygiene and distancing, to keep the spread of both diseases as low as possible.

Generally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend vaccinations for influenza begin in September or October, and that all individuals six months and older get the annual vaccine.
