Pella will have some holes to fill as they aim to replace key playmakers in the 2020 season.
On offense, Pella loses a lot to graduation and an out-of-state transfer — as leading playmaker Aaron Downs moved out of state and All-State receiver Logan Shetterly graduated to Central College. The pair accounted for 27 of the 46 Dutch touchdowns in 2019.
It will take a big year of off-season progression by second-year starting QB Ryan Mace, a senior, and Junior Nolan Clayberg, to try and replace some of the explosive plays they lose from the 2019 team.
Mace has been working to improve his overall passing accuracy — while tossing 19 touchdowns last season and rushing for five more, he threw 9 interceptions and completed just 49 percent of his passes. Clayberg averaged 5.8 yards per carry, but wants to improve on three touchdowns scored last season.
Pella opens the season at DCG this Friday, which can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
