The Eagles are forging ahead in week one with a new starting quarterback that has a very familiar last name.

Pella Christian Head Coach Rich Kacmarynski named his son Isaac as the week one starter heading into the Eagles matchup with Des Moines Christian this Friday.

An open competition for quarterback was the story of preseason camp on Eagle Lane and carried into the first two weeks of practice as Pella Christian was seeking a new leader on offense after six consecutive seasons of All-State caliber players helming one of the most productive scoring attacks in Class 1A.

Rich says Isaac worked over the past year to improve his throwing with older brother David — now an All-Conference Defensive Lineman at Dordt and a three-year starter at QB from 2014-2016, and also rates as one of the fastest Eagles on the roster, which could provide a similar mix of running and passing that P.C. leaned on with Dan Jungling in 2019.

Bennett Spronk was a part of the preseason QB competition after he emerged late last season as an explosive receiving threat, and is expected to serve in a large playmaking role on offense and as the starting free safety on defense. Beau Bush and his strong arm projects to serve as the primary backup to Kacmarynski, while Peyton Ritzert will now focus his attention on bolstering the Eagles’ defensive secondary alongside Spronk.

Pella Christian opens this Friday at Des Moines Christian, a Class 2A playoff qualifier in 2019. Hear the Eagles this week live on the KRLS2 stream at KNIAKRLS.com.
