More favorable conditions and lessons learned from Monday’s opening round yielded better results for the Central College men’s golf team at the Zach Johnson Invitational Tuesday. Competing at the par-71 Des Moines Golf and Country Club, sophomore Kyle Gabos turned in Central’s best round of the tournament and finished at 83-81-76—240. Freshman Harold Dobernecker still had the overall low with 79-79-81—239. Freshman Matt Briggs also had a good day, finishing with 83-81-77—241. Nic Kauffman followed with 83-84-80—247 while Mitch McComber shot 88-90-81—259.

The Dutch also had a pair of at-large entrants. Lucas Wendel shot 81-85-89—255 and John Oltman had 94-87-82—263. Central’s Tuesday round was more competitive but the Dutch were still last in the six-team field at 328-325-314—967. Host Drake University rallied to win with 303-316-293—912, overcoming Missouri State University which had 308-305-304—917.

Central is off until next Monday when the team plays the Ames Country Club in the Des Moines Area Community College Invitational.
