Since Ron Schipper took over as Central College head football coach in 1961, the Dutch have gone unbeaten in the regular season 16 times. And while every season, even an undefeated one, has its challenges, 2006 was full of potential potholes for the Dutch.
That year, Central had to survive a whopping three overtime games, beating Wartburg and Luther in back-to-back weeks, then having to gut it out in double overtime at Coe a month later. That game, from November 4th, 2006 in Cedar Rapids, is the focus of our “KRLS Classic” this Saturday.
While the final score was 31-28, it was a bit of a defensive battle. Neither team managed to top 300 yards, even with the two extra periods, and two of Central’s touchdowns came on a blocked punt and a halfback pass. Nevertheless, these Dutch were winners, and found a way to put the last three points on the board.
Trevor Castle and Chad Klein called the game that afternoon on 92.1 KRLS, and you can hear it all, all over again, starting this Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
