central-krls-classic-feature

The last time that the Central College football team was involved in a matchup of Top 10 ranked teams was the opening round of the 2009 NCAA playoffs.  Sixth-ranked Central hosted number seven Mary Hardin Baylor on November 21st, 2009 at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium – a game that we’ll highlight this Saturday on our “KRLS Classic” broadcast.

Central never held a lead in the game, falling behind 35-14 midway through the third quarter and still trailing 42-27 with less than ten minutes left.  But they scored two late touchdowns and lined up for a game-tying two-point conversion try with 28 seconds remaining.

Trailing by two, Central tried, and recovered an onside kick.  But the Dutch were flagged for offsides on the kicker, had to re-kick, and the Cru recovered before kneeling out the 42-40 victory.  Unfortunately for the Dutch, it’s impossible for a kicker to be offsides on an onside kick, and the officiating crew was reprimanded after the game, but the damage was already done.

Trevor Castle and George Wares have been a staple in the Dutch broadcast booth for more than 10 years, but this was one of their first games together on the mic.  You can hear it this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 on 92.1 KRLS.
