The Pleasantville Trojans’ first doubleheader ended in convincing fashion as both games were decided by double-digits.
Pleasantville’s girls’ team shook off a rough first quarter to come back and beat Melcher-Dallas 46-33, while the boys used a dominant second half to knock off Melcher-Dallas 56-37 in a doubleheader heard live on KNIA3. After scoring just four points in the first quarter, Pleasantville came back and started the second quarter with a 13-0 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a 21-14 halftime lead. That lead was never relinquished as Pleasantville led by as many as 15 in the game.
What was surprising about the performance was how well Senior Faith Vanderhart played while nursing a knee injury. She had ten points, tied for the team lead with Adi Adreon. Eight of Vanderhart’s points came in the second half to help pace the Trojans. Pleasantville Coach Jeff Cook tells KNIA Sports that his team needed to pick up the pace after scoring just four points in the first quarter.
As for Melcher-Dallas, they were dealt a difficult hand in the first quarter as senior guard Riley Enfield left the game with a knee injury and did not return. Replacing her the rest of the way was Hailey Hoch, who led the team in scoring with 11 points, including nine in the second half.
The Trojans boys outscored the Saints in the second half 35-20 in game two of the doubleheader, including a 18-0 run to start the second half.
Pleasantville’s top scorer was Mason Scheve, who led the way with 18 points, including three three-pointers. Caylor Clark emerged as the second scoring option, scoring 12 points and knocking down five of six free throws. Pleasantville Coach Tom Wilkins tells KNIA Sports that he was happy with the win, but cited that his team needed to come out sharper to start for their next game.
Melcher-Dallas came into this game shorthanded as Owen Suntken did not play due to a pending COVID-19 test. Steven Krpan was also forced to sit out for a game as a result of being ejected during the final football game of the season. Ryan Krpan showed up and scored a game-high 23 points, including scoring seven of 11 first-quarter points to start the night. The rest of the Melcher-Dallas team scored just 14 points, with Lane VanderLinden second on the team in scoring with four.
Pleasantville will have their next doubleheader Monday at Panorama with the girls game starting at 6:15 P.M. The game will be broadcast on kniakrls.com on the KNIA3 stream. Melcher-Dallas’ next doubleheader is Friday as they travel to Ankeny Christian. Tip-off for the girls’ game is at 6:00 P.M.
