A new ordinance takes effect today in Marion County, allowing for the operation of off-road utility vehicles on county roadways for recreational purposes. Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says that this is specific to utility vehicles, and that straddled vehicles, such as four-wheelers, are not included in the description of allowable vehicles.

“Polaris Rangers or Gators, those that are the bench seat type of vehicles are allowed. Without getting into the technical side of it, it has to be those types of vehicles. If there’s questions, you can call our office to check and see if it will qualify.”

Operation is limited to gravel roads. Paved roads may only be used to access the nearest gravel road, and may not be used as the primary route of travel. Operation is prohibited on all divided highways, unless making a direct crossing. Additionally, these vehicles must be registered with either the Iowa DNR or county recorder’s office.
