PCM’s basketball teams split a Heart of Iowa Conference Doubleheader at South Hamilton Tuesday night as the girls knocked off the Hawks 33-30, but the boys lost 42-35, as heard on the KRLS3 stream.
The Mustangs girls got their fourth win in their final game of the regular season thanks to stiff defense and fewer mistakes. After South Hamilton took the lead 30-28, Senior Riley Hjortsoj converted a three-point play to put PCM up for good. Coach Jeff Lindsay tells KRLS Sports that his team did a great job of taking care of the ball.
“Not turning the ball over. The second half when we played them at our place, we turned the ball over a little too much. They did put some heat on us tonight, but that is the growth that is positive to see as the season continues to move along. Because there are a lot of times you get to this part of the season and you are not looking to grow, you are trying to maintain.”
Lilli Baird led the Mustangs in scoring as she finished with 12 points, including knocking down all six of her free throws. The Mustangs girls finish the regular season with a 4-16 record.
The Mustangs boys put forth one of their best defensive performances of the season, but were unable to put together any offensive consistency. The loss puts PCM at 8-10 on the season with two games left to go. Carson Vandelune led the way with 14 points, including two of PCM’s four three-pointers. The Mustangs were outscored 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
PCM’s girls will be back in action for their first playoff game Saturday night at Nevada. The game tips off at 7:00 PM and will be broadcast on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com with Alex Koch on the call. PCM’s boys will play their final home game of the season Thursday against South Hardin, with the game tipping off at 7:45 PM.
