The Knoxville Police Department is asking for the community’s help in solving and deterring crimes within the city through the department’s community camera program. Residents who have surveillance cameras outside their homes are encouraged to let the department know. Chief Aaron Fuller stresses that police department staff do not have the ability to tap into these cameras, and that it’s all based on consent.
“We don’t want usernames and passwords to anybody’s cameras. All we’re looking for is if you have cameras, and if a crime happens in your area, if you’re willing to help us solve that crime, we’d like your name and contact information, what cameras you have, where they point, and go from there.”
This information is put into a database, and the department may ask to view footage if a crime occurs in an area where a camera is present. Residents can register their cameras online to help the police department solve crimes. Hear more from Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller on today’s Let’s Talk Knoxville.
