The Norwalk girls basketball team hosted Des Moines Hoover Wednesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs. It was all Warriors all the way against the outmatched Huskies, as Norwalk cruised to a 72-11 victory, as aired on 94.3 KNIA.
Hoover scored the first bucket of the game, but Norwalk quickly came to life, scoring 23 in the first to take the lead for good. Another 26 in the second gave the Warriors a 49-5 halftime lead. Norwalk played crisp basketball throughout to put the game out of reach.
The bench was emptied in the second half, as Norwalk coated to the win with the running clock rule in effect. Hoover turned the ball over 36 times, and Norwalk had 18 steals. It was a season-high offensive output and season-low points allowed for Norwalk.
The Warriors improve to 12-10 overall, and advance to Saturday’s regional semifinal round at Creston. That game tips off at 7:00 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 on the KNIA3 stream.
History was made Wednesday as the Norwalk wrestling team competed at the state team dual tournament for the first time. The #7-seed Warriors placed fifth.
Norwalk started the day with a 37-30 loss to #2 Southeast Polk. That loss put the Warriors in the consolation side of the bracket, pitting Norwalk against #6 Bettendorf. A 39-30 victory propelled the Warriors to the fifth place match, where they defeated #8 Linn-Mar 56-21, capping off a 2-1 day for the team. Find full results here.
Norwalk now shifts their focus to the individual tournament, where seven Warrior wrestlers will compete. Class 3A action begins today at 1:30 p.m. inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
