The Indianola wrestling team sent five athletes to the state meet at Wells Fargo Arena this year, and will look to reload and make another run with three of those wrestlers lost to graduation. The Indians had state qualifiers Sean Cunningham, Jacob Darr, and Jaylin Smith, with Smith finishing in eighth place. The good news for the Indians, is they will return Bowen and Ryder Downey to the squad, who had third and fourth place finishes respectively to give the lower weights a lot of experience. Head coach Clint Manny tells KNIA Sports the returning talent will have opportunities next year.
“We’ve got a ton of depth at the middle weights, but it’s all young depth. We’ve got 6-7 freshman at 138-145lbs and another 6-7 freshman at both ends of that weight. Some great depth there, and some upperclassman as well but when you are behind multiple time state qualifiers getting your chance to get in the lineup is few and far between with the weights we’ve had there the past few years.”
The Indians will also return standouts Walker Whalen, and 2020 state qualifier Cooper Belt who was lost to injury this season.
