One of the biggest highlights of the Knoxville Girls Basketball season was an early season win over Van Meter that took three overtimes and a last second steal and basket as time expired. With the Bulldogs leading by one point and two seconds remaining all they had to do was to inbound the ball and run out the clock. However, Knoxville’s Maggie Wilkins had other plans and stole the inbound pass and laid in the winning basket as time expired. Panthers Coach Jim Uitermarkt tells KNIA/KRLS it was another example of the girls not giving up until the clock hit zero.
Uitermarkt:
“When you’re down 1 point with 2 seconds left, you’re chances of winning that is 1/10th of one percent, and then to the credit of the girls, they played good defense and forced them to make a pass they shouldn’t have and got the winning basket.”
The Panthers won that game 66-65 with Wilkins scoring 38 points, which was one off of the single game school record, and completed the double-double with 11 steals, which tied a single game school record.
