President Biden signed the recently passed the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, the American Rescue Plan, which among many other items sends a $1,400 relief check for eligible recipients and funds for vaccine distribution. Congresswoman Cindy Axne tells KNIA News the unemployment assistance for keeping those who lost their job during the pandemic out of financial hardships was something she pushed for.

“That allows Iowans who needed those unemployment benefits last year to waive taxes on the first $10,200 on the support they got. This was included and I can’t think of a better time to get this done because the last thing I can think of is kicking someone when they are down. They are on unemployment already getting a massive tax bill that they can’t afford. I can’t even imagine how difficult that would be. So we got that in.”
