The Pella High girls basketball team will have a new coach next season after Jerod Garland announced yesterday that he is stepping down following 12 years at the helm.

Garland has been in the Pella School District as a teacher since 2002, and was an assistant coach for seven years before taking over for the retired Mike Vint at the beginning of the 2009 season.  He’s led the Lady Dutch to a 194-83 record and two state tournament berths, including an appearance in the 2016 state championship game.

“It’s been a great journey”, Garland said. “There have been some incredible highs and tough lows. Even more than the big wins, I will remember the coaches I’ve worked with as well as the amazing group of girls that have played for the Lady Dutch over the years. There are a number of reasons I’m stepping away. It’s been a tough decision, but ultimately it’s time for a new voice. I look forward to being a fan next year.”

Activities Director Matt Fouch told KNIA/KRLS Sports, “I would like to thank coach Garland for his commitment and leadership to the girls basketball program over the past decade.  He has touched the lives of countless student athletes and we thank him for helping mold young women of character.”

Pella is coming off an 11-11 campaign this past season.
