The Simpson Storm softball team swept Buena Vista in their American Rivers Conference opening tilts Saturday afternoon, surrendering just 7 total hits winning 7-3 and 7-1 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm fell behind early in game one surrendering a run in the top of the first, but that would be the only time the Beavers mustered any sort of offense to challenge Simpson, as Sara Trent hit a two run bomb in the bottom of the inning as the Storm put up six runs overall to take a commanding lead they would not relinquish. Emily Bell pitched seven solid innings giving up just three hits and one run, while Buena Vista got just one more hit in the contest scoring a pair of unearned runs late. Trent, Randie Richmond, Cam Leo, and Maddie Luderman all had a pair of hits in the contest with Trent driving in four.
Game two was a much more quiet affair until the fourth inning when Simpson blew the game wide open with a three-run bases clearing double by Taylor Stamm to take a 4-0 lead, and adding another on a hit by Brooke Tucker and a solo shot from Luderman later in the contest. Trent added another three hits in the second game, while Stamm had three RBI in the contest.
Head coach Brent Matthias tells KNIA Sports it was good to just be back home playing softball.
“We dressed everybody today. We talked about the culture beforehand, because we haven’t played a home game in 696 days. When you go back and count that, its a long time. Everybody is working hard, from player number 39 to the top player. Our culture is we win together we lose together.”
The Storm improve to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, and they will wrap up a three-game series today.
