Perhaps there was an upside to dealing with the brutal playing conditions the Central College men’s golf team faced this spring. The Dutch carded a disappointing 317 in the 18-hole morning round of the 72-hole American Rivers Conference Championships Thursday. But as afternoon winds gusting beyond 25 miles per hour sent many scores soaring in the nine-team field, Central was dialed in, turning in a 305 in the second round. The Dutch stand third at 622. Tournament favorite Nebraska Wesleyan University made an even bigger leap and leads at 306-288—594 with Loras College second at 296-318—614. The University of Dubuque is fourth at 304-322—626.

Harold Dobernecker is tied for sixth in the medalist standings at 78-75—153. Nebraska Wesleyan’s Christian Hall leads at 73-73—146 on the par-72 layout. Dustin Haines is ninth at 78-76—154, with Matt Briggs tied for 10th at 80-75—155. A top-10 finish would bring all-conference distinction. Lucas Wendel is 22nd at 81-79—160 and John Oltman is 34th at 88-84—172.

The final 36 holes are set for today and Saturday.
