Today is Police Officer Memorial Day, a day set aside each year on May 15th to honor law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. Former Indianola Police Officer William E. “Pop” Hickman is the only Indianola Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty, passing away in 1957 from injuries sustained while investigating a vehicle accident. Hickman was honored in 2019 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington DC, the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
