It took an inning for the gears to turn on opening day, but once they started, they didn’t stop for the Pella baseball team until they earned a 14-3 five-inning win over PCM Monday night, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Mustangs jumped on the Dutch early with a two-run first inning, and Easton Webb and the PCM defense retired the first five Pella batters in nine-pitches in the bottom of the frame.

However, the Dutch offense responded with five in the bottom of the 2nd and seven in the bottom of the 3rd, with two home runs book-ending the scoring; the first coming from Cole Hillman to give Pella a lead they wouldn’t lose, and Nick DeJong putting an exclamation point on opening day with a two-run shot off of the scoreboard:

Jason Knox earned the victory on the mound for the green and white, striking out 10 batters in four innings, and recording Ks on his first six outs.

Pella improves to 1-0, while PCM drops to 0-1; the Dutch travel to Carlisle today, while the Mustangs have their home opener vs. Nevada Wednesday.

Lady Dutch Softball Head Coach Katie Gravert earned her first career win as the Pella softball team pushed by Colfax-Mingo in a 7-1 win Monday night at home.

After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, the Lady Dutch scored 6 of their 7 unanswered runs in the first three frames. Taylor Tousey gave up four hits in seven innings in the circle while going 3-for-3 from the plate, and Kiki Riggen went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Pella is 1-0 and next hosts Grand View Christian in softball action Friday.
