The Indianola Mayor’s Youth Council and Indianola Parks and Rec are hosting Bike Fest 2021: Pedal Palooza! later this month, an event promoting bicycle safety and fun for Indianola youth. Karley Smith and Cora Charleville with the Indianola Mayor’s Youth Council tell KNIA News the event will have a ton of activities, and place an emphasis on proper safety equipment and things to watch out for when riding a bike.

Karley Smith
“We want the kids to be able to know how to cross a road for example. A lot of kids ride their bikes around town all summer to the pool and other activities, and knowing bicycle safety and how to look out for other bikers and cars is really important.”

Cora Charleville
“Also just wearing a helmet is a big help. You may not think you are that high off the ground riding a bike, but a helmet and special pads on your elbows and knees is super important. I can attest to that, I fell off my bike and broke my arm when I was a kid. So it’s important to know your bike’s safety because you can have moments like that where you do get hurt and wearing a helmet or other protection can help prevent those accidents from happening.

Bike Fest 2021 will take place at Irving Elementary on Saturday, June 19th from 10am to noon.
