It was a disappointing night in Eddyville for both Knoxville softball and baseball squads on Thursday. The Softball Panthers fell to the EBF Rockets 3-2 while baseball was swept in a doubleheader 19-12 in game one and 5-0 in the nightcap. The softball contest was heard live on 95.3 KNIA and got off to a positive start for the Panthers with Brittany Bacorn continuing her solid hitting by whacking a two run homer over the left field fence to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. But that is all Knoxville would get as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont would score in the third to cut the lead to 2-1, then plate two more in the 5th where Knoxville would commit three errors. Coach Carla Smith told KNIA/KRLS Sports she and the rest of the team would like to have that inning back.
Smith:
“We came out and put a few errors on the board in the 5th inning. It all comes down to who comes out and puts the best team on the field and tonight we just didn’t do that.”
Ciara Heffron took the loss, going the distance allowing three runs on seven hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Knoxville is 6-3 but drops to 0-2 in the South Central Conference. Meanwhile, over on the other side of the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont athletic complex, the baseball Panthers had a wild game one dropping that one 19-12. The Panthers were down 13-3 heading into the 4th inning when they struck for nine runs to cut the lead to 13-12. But the Rockets managed six more runs to get the final margin. Bode Cox went 2/5 with five RBI. In game two, the Rockets shut down the Panthers while scoring five runs of their own. Knoxville committed five errors in that game. The Panthers are now 3-5 on the season and drop to 1-3 in the South Central Conference. Both baseball and softball squads travel to Centerville tonight. You can hear the baseball contest on 95.3 KNIA beginning at 7:30.
