indianola-3

The Indianola softball and baseball squads did not have successful road trips to Dallas Center-Grimes Friday evening in Little Hawkeye Conference play, with the softball team falling 7-6 in walkoff fashion, while the Indians boys fell 7-4 in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indians softball team got a lead early with a Destiny Lewis home run, building a 3-1 lead through the third inning, before the Mustangs struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. The two squads traded runs going into the sixth, when another Lewis home run tied the contest, then Indianola scored a run in the top of the seventh to lead 6-5 going into the final inning, where the Mustangs got a two-run hit to win the contest. Indianola falls to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, and they compete throughout the day today in the Valley Shootout Tournament.

The Indians baseball squad had trouble getting contact early off of Mustangs pitching, but that did not prohibit them from getting baserunners and taking an early 3-1 lead despite no hits through the second inning. Both teams would find ways to score, and the game was tied at four apiece heading into the bottom of the fifth. Multiple hit batters and a clutch RBI hit put the Mustangs up three, which was enough to put the Indians away. Head coach Jon Fitzpatrick tells KNIA Sports giving up free baserunners put the Indians at a disadvantage they could not overcome.

Indianola falls to 9-2 and 2-1, and they match up with Grinnell on Monday for a conference doubleheader.
