A six-run first inning set the table for the Pella baseball team in a 8-2 win over Newton, while another big inning doomed the Lady Dutch softball team in a 12-8 loss on the road to the Cardinals Friday.
Pella’s bats set the table for pitchers Keagan Miedema and Cole Hillman to combine to give up two runs in seven innings. Nick DeJong, Ryan Mace, and Mason Wittmer each drove in a pair of runs on offense.
Despite leading the majority of the evening, the Lady Dutch gave up five runs in the 6th inning and fell into too deep of a hole late against Newton. Kylie Tauke, Bailey Brown, and Ava Curry each had a pair of hits, with Tauke and Curry driving in a pair of runs.
The Pella baseball team is 6-3 and off until a road trip to Oskaloosa Monday for a doubleheader; the softball team is 1-6 and has two games at the Oskaloosa Invitational today, including No. 5 in 3A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Sigourney.
