A stretch of seven games in five days was nearly perfect for the Pella baseball team, but they settled for a split with Grinnell in a pair of hard fought games, falling in eight innings 6-5 and winning the nightcap 4-3 Friday evening.
The Dutch answered a 2-0 deficit after one with a four run 2nd inning in the opener, with the teams trading runs. However, Pella gave up a late lead in the 6th inning, and could not find the runs they needed before the Tigers walked it off in extra innings.
In game two, Pella jumped to a 4-1 lead after the top of the 4th, and Mason Wittmer was electric on the mound, scattering five hits and striking out seven Grinnell batters. However, the home team mounted another late rally, scoring two but leaving the potential tying and winning runs on base as out No. 3 was recorded. Wittmer was 3-for-3 in the nightcap at the plate.
Pella enters the weekend 11-4 and 6-2 in conference competition, good for 2nd place alone. They head to Eagle Lane to take on Pella Christian Monday, which will be featured on the KRLS3 stream.
The losing streak has extended to 14 games, even as the Lady Dutch softball team fought tough in 10-0 and 6-4 losses to Grinnell, who just dropped out of the 4A rankings this week. In game two, Kylie Tauke was 3-for-4 and Ella Corbin was 2-for-3, both of whom also scored a run. Pella left the tying runs on base as a 7th inning rally came to a close in the nightcap.
The 1-14 Lady Dutch are in a tournament today in Solon.
