Drought conditions are rapidly spreading and intensifying across south central Iowa. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Report shows Marion County and most of Warren County in Moderate Drought conditions, with Severe Drought spreading into northwest Warren and most of Polk Counties. Moderate conditions are now reported in most of Lucas, Jasper, and Mahaska Counties as well. Chances for scattered storms will persist into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service, with the next best opportunity coming Sunday afternoon and evening as a strong cold front pushes through the area.
