The #4 in class 5A Indianola softball team swept #4 in class 4A Norwalk Wednesday evening to earn the Little Hawkeye Conference title, 4-2 in game one and 12-2 in six innings in game two, both being heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
Game one was a pitchers duel, with Indianola getting out on top in first on RBI hits from Destiny Lewis and Macie Mays to lead 2-0, then added another two in the fourth on a two-run home run from Hanna Graham. Norwalk threatened in the sixth getting the bases loaded with one out, but pitcher Kate Kralik shut the door with back to back strikeouts. The Warriors ended up scoring a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, to get close, but the Indians ended the rally to pick up the win. Kralik allowed only five hits and struck out six. Charlee Peters had a 2-3 game at the plate for Norwalk in the contest, while Selia Becker led the way for Indianola also going 2-3.
Game two saw the Indians explode for four home runs, including two from leadoff hitter Alley May. The Indians scored seven runs in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI double from Becker, an RBI single from Graham, and a three-run bomb from May to break the game open. The Warriors got runs back in the third and fourth innings off of hits from Peters and a HBP from Talia Laverato, but another solo shot from May and a two-run blast from Becker put the game away.
Indians senior Alley May said it was a combination of the lineup tonight that carried both games, and when they are all working together is when they are at their best.
“I think it’s just a huge threat for our team when we can hit so well. Everybody in the lineup can hit, and I know it’s a confidence booster for everybody on the team when we hit. I don’t have a doubt when they get up to the plate.”
May drove in four runs, while Becker went 3-3 with another four driven in to lead Indianola, while Norwalk was led by a Laverato double and stellar work in the field for Morgan Weeks.
The Indians improve to 29-4 on the season and 18-1 in conference play, and play at Pella tonight in a game that can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The Warriors are now 21-11 on the season and 14-6 in conference play, and are at Pella Christian tonight.
