The Norwalk and Indianola baseball teams met in the season’s final Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at the home of the Indians Wednesday evening, and split the games, as aired on KNIA3. The #6 in Class 4A Warriors took game 1 while the Indians bounced back for a 4-3 win in game 2.
Norwalk took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, which they would hold onto the rest of the way. Another run in the fourth and two in the fifth set the tone for the rest of the way, highlighted by a Brock Miller home run. Indianola’s lone run came in the sixth. Miller had three hits in game 1 to lead the way, while Vinnie Mauro was the winning pitcher. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out three.
Norwalk again struck first in the top of the first of game 2, but Indianola’s Brady Blake responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to tie it up. The Warriors regained a 3-2 advantage in the third, but a Norwalk balk tied the game, and another run scored on runner interference call on a dropped third strike. Mark Pepper scored on a passed ball in the fourth, which concluded the scoring. Indianola Head Coach John Fitzpatrick says this is a big resume-building win for his team ahead of this weekend’s seeding meetings.
Blake and Pepper each had two hits to lead the way in game 2. Blake was also the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and three walks while recording one strikeout. Norwalk moves to 25-3 overall and 17-3 in conference play. They return to action tonight at Pella Christian, which will air on 92.1 KRLS. Indianola moves to 20-9 overall and 12-7 in conference play. They’ll be at Pella Friday, which will air on 94.3 KNIA and 92.1 KRLS.
