The Little Hawkeye Conference summer season officially wrapped up Saturday as the Pella and DCG baseball teams finished what they started on June 25th, splitting a doubleheader 8-4 in favor of the Dutch in game one, and a 4-3 Mustangs win in game two Saturday afternoon.
Lightning suspended the opening contest as Pella held an 8-3 lead in the midst of a five-run road team 7th inning rally. Mason Wittmer went the roundabout way of getting a complete game victory on the mound — finishing his last inning of seven pitched 15 days after he tossed the first six, giving up four runs and striking out five, while Ryan Mace was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI — all of which came on the original night of competition.
Game two was played in its entirety Saturday afternoon, and a late-inning rally fell short. Jason Knox and Gage Gift each had an RBI in the effort. Pella finishes the conference season in 5th place at 11-10, with the team’s overall record now at 18-15. The Dutch welcome Washington to the Tulip City Monday at 7:30 p.m. for regular season non-conference competition.
