Before the Top 10 countdown of the 2020-2021 school year begins, it’s time to look at the honorable mentions from what was a successful year for Norwalk Athletics.

It was the first school year of KNIA/KRLS coverage, with a schedule of select football games beginning in the fall. After that success, full coverage began with the winter sports season, and KNIA/KRLS became the home of Warrior sports.

One of the honorable mentions was a recent happening, when the softball team picked up a sweep of Dallas Center-Grimes on the road. The #6 in Class 4A Warriors went on the road to take on the #2 in Class 4A Mustangs, who were still undefeated in conference play at the time. Norwalk picked up a sweep by scores of 3-1 and 1-0, staying alive in their race for the conference title.

The school was back in Class 4A in most sports this year, and for the first time, the boys basketball team won a game in the 4A playoffs, defeating Mason City 71-62 in the first round. The Warriors would move on and fall to Ankeny 48-40 in the substate semifinal.

The girls basketball team picked up a 65-61 win over #13 in Class 4A Grinnell on January 8th, in a back-and-forth contest. Head Coach Jill Martin said after the game that was a turning point in the season.

The final honorable mention came during the fall season on September 15th, when the Warrior volleyball team came back from down 2-1 to defeat Oskaloosa 3-2, with scores of 16-25/25-23/19-25/25-23/15/12. Abigail Brenizer had 13 kills and three aces while Grace Sutcliffe had 27 assists and 12 digs to lead the way.
