The #5 sports story of the 2020-2021 school year at Norwalk involves a sophomore who accomplished big feats on the wrestling mat and football field. Maddux Borcherding-Johnson qualified in the 285 lb. weight class at the 3A state tournament, and had a memorable run. After wins in the first and second rounds, he fell in the semifinals to move to the consolation bracket. Two more wins there vaulted him to a third place finish.

Earlier this summer, Borcherding-Johnson announced his commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes football program. He was a force on the Warrior d-line last season, ranking third on the team in tackles, second in sacks, and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss. He says he started receiving attention after a dominant performance in last year’s postseason game at Lewis Central, and the decision to choose Iowa was an easy one.

Borcherding-Johnson says he’s looking forward to continued development throughout his final two seasons in the Norwalk football program, and will also develop skills as a wrestler.
