A wild finish in the Round of 32 expanded football playoffs was the No. 2 moment on the countdown of top stories from Eagle Lane in 2020-21.
With under 10 minutes to play in the October 23rd Class 1A postseason matchup at Pella Christian High School, the Eagles held a 21-6 lead over Panorama. Eight minutes later, the Panthers trailed just 21-19 and the road team had first down and goal at the P.C. five yard line.
When Panther quarterback Domonic Walker bolted toward the end zone, Cody Boender punched the ball free and the Eagles recovered, preserving a two-point victory for coach Rich Kacmarynski’s club.
Boender had a monster game for the Eagles, rushing 20 times for 141 yards, intercepting two passes on defense, and coming up with a stop on Panorama’s two-point conversion, in addition to forcing the game-clinching fumble. Luke Mulder also tallied a sack in the game, which gave him the single season record for the Eagles.
With the win, Pella Christian became an official football state playoff qualifier for the 13th straight season.
