At the Newton Early Bird Invitational Tuesday night, PCM’s volleyball squad opened the season with a 2-1 record and placed second behind the host, Newton.
The Mustangs opened the tournament by sweeping Des Moines Hoover in their first match, two sets to none. PCM won both sets by scores of 21-9 and 21-13. PCM in the match had nine assists, including three from Sidney Shaver. The Mustangs also got nine kills against the Huskies. Chelsea Bird had four kills and Joslin Briles had three in the victory.
PCM’s second match was a sweep of Saydel, two sets to none as well and also by scores of 21-9 and 21-13. Riley Johannes had five kills while Claire Wilson had three. Shaver had eight of the Mustangs’ nine assists in the victory. RaeAnn Duinink had nine of PCM’s 28 digs in the sweep of the Eagles.
The Mustangs came up just short in the invitational championship match against the host Newton, losing two sets to one. PCM lost the first set, 22-20 and came back and won the second set 21-15. The final set went to Newton, 15-6. Bird, Duinink, and Riley Johannes combined to have all 16 of the Mustangs’ digs. Bird had five kills and Shaver had six assists.
After the invitational, PCM has a 2-1 record on the season. The next time the Mustangs will take the court will be a tournament at West Marshall Saturday night.
